Why Zeacon Is Different

|

Whether you’re a professional in the live streaming world or somebody who is looking to start their first broadcast, you’ve most likely came across OBS or Open Broadcaster Software. It’s been a recommended, and arguably an essential tool, for anybody that has wanted to start streaming for nearly a decade.

What is OBS?

OBS is a free downloadable software tool that is primarily used to capture your camera footage or screen and shared to various platforms online. Typically, on these platforms, users would host events, discuss with others, and interact with one another all in real time with little to no delay. With the remote access world that we live in now, live streaming has become a tool used by businesses and consumers alike to reconnect once again.

However, OBS has been notoriously difficult to use in the past and in the present due to its complexity and lack of built-in guidance. Many users on online discussion forums such as Reddit, Quora, and even on OBS’s own discussion forum talk about how complicated the streaming software is to use. With OBS’s steep learning curve, it leaves the user with one of two options: find another streaming software that’s easier to use but sacrifices quality or go through hours of information on OBS’s forum and other online blogs to figure out which settings to use or to figure out why they're lagging during their stream.

Why Live Stream At All?

Because of the complexity of using OBS as a live streaming tool in the past, many people have looked away from live streaming as an option to create content and connect with their viewers. With the recent pandemic and the ongoing threats of new COVID-19 variants, live streaming has become more popular than ever. In 2020 alone, viewers watched a staggering 17 billion hours' worth of content on popular live streaming platform, Twitch.Tv, according to an article published by StreamElements. In the same article, Facebook’s own live streaming platform saw an increase in watch hours of 166% from 1.35 billion hours in 2019 to 3.59 billion hours by the end of 2020.

The growth of these two platforms, and the entire live streaming industry, can be partially attributed to the ongoing pandemic and the heightened number of individuals working from home. However, as the COVID-19 vaccines were distributed and as nations regained a semblance of normalcy, Twitch and the entirety of the live streaming space has continued to break new records and metrics in the industry. This proves that live streaming isn’t just the newest fad on the block but a justifiable tool to create compelling and enriching content.

Another reason why many companies and brands are turning to live streaming is the fact that it drives more viewer engagement compared to regular video streaming sites. According to an article from Conviva, a regular live stream viewer watches a stream for nearly 24 minutes on average. While on the other hand, regular video on demand viewers would typically spend around 18 minutes watching a video on average. This is a nearly 35% increase in watch time between the two viewers which means that they’re being exposed to your brand or company for longer periods of time.

This increase in watch time is very important because it means that more viewers, on average, are listening and engaging with your content for longer. This allows you to build a deeper connection with your audience and enables you to build trust with them as well. However, if there continues to be a substantial learning curve to live streaming, it becomes very unfeasible for many to utilize the benefits of it.
